Michael was born on December 28, 1967 in Syracuse, NY; the youngest of five children. Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and several other disabilities. He lived in Fulton, with his family until April 1971, after that transitioning to several group homes over the years, which included, Syracuse Developmental Center, Webb Avenue, Individual Residential Alternative in Central Square and his current home on Fravor Rd. in Mexico.
Throughout his life, despite all his physical limitations, Michael enjoyed outdoor activities, concerts, the NYS Fair and shopping trips to the mall. He has always been lovingly cared for by all his nurses and aides, especially Sharon McPherson, who has been his angel on earth for over 25 years. Michael’s family is deeply grateful to all the special nurses and aides at his home.
Michael was pre-deceased by, his father, Gene M. Etchie and his grandparents, Freeman and Eleanor Michaud Etchie and Russell and Mildred LaVere Black.
He is survived by, his mother, Diane Black Miller (Harold); siblings, Kathleen Vono (Samuel), Nancy Bush (Rick), Karel Collette (Robert) and Timothy M. Etchie; along with nieces and nephews, Quinn, Emily, Olivia, Carson, Spencer, Teddy and Cooper. Michael’s large family also includes several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018 from St. Anne Mother of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Mexico. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mexico Ecumenical Food Pantry, Mexico.
