Born November 15, 1920 in Pulaski, NY, she was the daughter of the late Homer G. Smithers and Mae (Byington) Smithers Wilcox of Mexico, NY. She graduated from Mexico Academy High School and from Oswego State Teachers College, where she earned a teaching certificate. She then taught 2nd grade at Mexico Academy for ten years and later in the Cincinnati Public Schools. After her kids grew up, she worked toward her master’s degree and taught remedial reading. Later she participated in the LEARN program teaching adults to read.
She was humble and kind, honest and trustworthy, and was thoroughly devoted to her family. She loved to read, and enjoyed gardening, word games and bridge. She fondly recalled the many family vacations camping throughout the US and UK, and trips to Switzerland and Hawaii. She spent many years knitting sweaters for underprivileged children abroad. Surviving are her five children, Douglas E. Outterson of Bettendorf, IA; George G. (Susan) Outterson of Chapel Hill, NC; Robert A. (Judith) McNee of Wilton, CT; Margaret A. Trikoupis of Elmwood, NJ; William S. (Marianne) McNee of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Robert C. Smithers and Dorothea M. Smithers, as well as by her husbands, G. Gilbert Outterson and Robert B. McNee.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, at the Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Avenue Mexico, NY, with burial at the Mexico Primitive Cemetery.
